Who should take care of the elderly?

“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old” (Proverbs 23:22). At various stages of the human life cycle, old age is the last stage of human life where a human being turns into an emotionally and physically weak person. This is the period of his life when he needs a lot of care; old age is a time when every body needs love and affection from their loved ones. However, in this essay, I will put emphasis on how we should take care of the elderly in a good way, emotionally and physically. Also this, I will try to analyze the factors that cause problems in taking care of old people and how we should avoid them.

In different countries of the world people live according to their own cultural values and we also see the differences of how they take care of their elderly society. In different societies, for instance, most countries in Asia and the Middle East, it is the family members’ duty to take care of their aging parents and grandparents. This results in, elderly people live happily with their families and their needs are fulfilled by their family members. However, in modern societies, e.g. European countries and the US, the life differs from that of Asian countries.

There come moments of ups and downs in life when everyone needs someone for comfort. Especially so, in the modern society of the 21st century where everyone seems to be busy with their own life and work. The family members do not have much time to spend with their older members. For instance, in a family where everyone works outside the home and often has no time to be together. Nevertheless, the older family members who are not any longer physically and mentally well are commonly sent to community well-being centres.
