What is manufacturing:
Manufacturing is a Latin word. ‘Manu’ means ‘Hand’ and ‘Facts’ means ‘Made By’. Manufacturing is defined as:
“Process of converting raw material into the useful products by considering, 1. Design of the product.
2. Selection of the material.
3. Sequence of processes by which it is manufactured”.
Manufacturing Engineering:
“Manufacturing engineering is a discipline of engineering dealing with different manufacturing practices and the research and development of systems, processes, machines, tools and equipment”. It also defined as,

“Manufacturing engineering includes product design and manufacturing system design as well as operation of the factory”. It dealing with machines that turn raw materials to a new product. Engineering activities involved in the creation and operation of the technical processes that convert raw materials, energy, and purchased items into components for sale to other manufacturers. In particular, manufacturing engineering involves the analysis and modification of product designs so as to assure manufacturability; the design, selection, specification and optimization of the required equipment, tooling, processes and operations and the determination of other technical matters required to make a given product according to the desired volume, timetable, quality level and other specifications. Manufacturing Engineering has many important branches.

This field also deals with the integration of different facilities and systems for producing quality products (with optimal expenditure) by applying the principles of physics and the results of manufacturing systems studies, such as the following: Craft

Computer integrated manufacturing
Agile manufacturing
Putting-out system
Computer-aided technologies in manufacturing

History:
‘Manufacture’ 1st time used in 1567 and ‘Manufacturing’ 1st time used in 1683. The history can be known to factories in 18th century in UK. However, home workshops were build in ancient China, ancient Rome and Middle East. Many historians believe Houlton’s Soho Manufactory as the first modern factory. Many historians regard Matthew Houlton’s Coho Manufactory (established in 1761 in Birmingham) as the first modern factory.
Manufacturing processes:
Manufacturing process is science and technology by which a material is converted into a useful shape, with a structure and properties. Simply, “All that is done to convert stuff into things”.

The following are the various manufacturing processes used in Mechanical Engineering:

1. Casting:
It is one of the most important manufacturing processes used in Mechanical Engineering. The castings are obtained by remelting of ingots in a cupola or some other foundry furnace and then pouring this molten metal into metal or sand moulds. Important casting processes are as follows: Sand mould casting

Permanent mould casting

2. Forging:
“It is the process of heating a metal to a desired temperature in order to acquire sufficient plasticity, followed by operations like hammering, bending and pressing, etc. to give it a desired shape. The various forging processes are: 1. Smith forging or hand forging

2. Power forging,
3. Machine forging or upset forging
4. Drop forging or stamping”

3. Hot working:

It is defined as:
“An intentional deformation of metals plastically under the action of externally applied forces”.

The processes are:
1. Hot rolling
2. Hot forging
3. Hot spinning
